Pfeiffer University recognized two outstanding members of its academic community during the 2026 Convocation ceremony with the presentation of the University’s highest faculty and staff honors: the Mary E. Foster Webb and Henry Thomas “Toby” Webb, Jr. Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Starnes Award for Outstanding Achievement. Recipients are selected for their exceptional contributions to student success, institutional excellence, and the mission of Pfeiffer University.

This year’s honorees, Dr. Samantha Pennington ’11 and Ryan Reinhart, exemplify the commitment to teaching, service, and leadership that defines the Pfeiffer experience.

“At Pfeiffer, some of our most important work happens through the relationships our faculty and staff build with students every day,” said Dr. Scott Bullard, president of Pfeiffer University. “Dr. Pennington and Mr. Reinhart represent the very best of our community. They lead with purpose, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to student success. We are proud to recognize their contributions and grateful for the impact they have on our students and our University.”

Webb Award Honors Excellence in Teaching

The 2026-2027 Webb Award was presented to Dr. Samantha Pennington ’11, assistant professor of health and natural sciences, recognizing her exceptional commitment to student learning and development. Established by the children of Mary Foster Webb and Henry “Toby” Webb, Jr., the award honors outstanding teaching and is especially meaningful because recipients are nominated by Pfeiffer students.

Students praised Pennington for creating a classroom environment where they feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow. Nominators highlighted her responsiveness to student feedback, her innovative and organized teaching methods, and her ability to make complex subjects accessible and engaging. They also noted her dedication to adapting courses and assignments in ways that foster deeper understanding and student success.

Beyond the classroom, students emphasized her commitment to mentoring and supporting them academically, personally, and professionally. Whether providing additional guidance, helping students navigate future career goals, or simply checking in to ensure they are succeeding, she was described as a faculty member whose impact extends far beyond a single course or semester.

“The thing that makes Dr. Pennington such an exceptional educator is her ability to combine academic excellence with genuine care for her students,” said Dr. Greg Pillar, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Her teaching challenges students to think deeply, encourages them to grow in confidence, and creates an environment where they know they are supported. The fact that this recognition comes directly from students makes it a testament to the lasting influence she has on their lives.”

Starnes Award Recognizes Exceptional Service and Leadership

The 2026 Starnes Award was presented to Ryan Reinhart, whose recent transition from associate dean of students to registrar marks the next step in a Pfeiffer career devoted to serving students and strengthening the University.  The award honors his outstanding contributions to student growth and achievement, exemplary servant leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Pfeiffer community.

Established to recognize full-time faculty and staff members who make significant contributions through academic, service, humanitarian, or athletic endeavors, the Starnes Award honors individuals whose impact extends well beyond the expectations of their role. Recipients are distinguished by their strong mentorship and leadership.

Reinhart’s nomination cited his efforts during a period of significant staffing transition through which he helped guide the Student Development team while assuming additional responsibilities and leading critical initiatives that strengthened both student services and University operations. His accomplishments included redesigning Pfeiffer’s housing selection process, increasing revenue through camps, conferences, and student housing, and helping lead the implementation of the University’s Pharos student management software. These efforts enhanced services for students while supporting the University’s strategic and financial goals. Colleagues also praised his ability to identify solutions that place student well-being at the center of decision-making.

Yet what distinguished his nomination most was his extraordinary commitment to servant leadership. Nominators described the countless ways Reinhart quietly invests in others, from ensuring Orientation Leaders begin their days prepared during SOAR to supporting colleagues during admissions events, mentoring student leaders, and helping students navigate difficult situations. Though often unseen by the broader campus community, these acts of service have become hallmarks of his leadership.

“Ryan’s leadership is often most visible in the success of others,” Bullard said. “He consistently puts students first while finding thoughtful and innovative ways to strengthen our institution. From improving processes and services to supporting colleagues and student leaders, Ryan exemplifies servant leadership in action. This recognition reflects the tremendous value he brings to Pfeiffer every day.”

Together, this year’s recipients embody two of Pfeiffer University’s highest ideals: excellence in teaching and excellence in service. Through their dedication to students, commitment to continuous improvement, and willingness to go beyond what is expected, Dr. Samantha Pennington and Ryan Reinhart demonstrate the transformational impact that caring educators and servant leaders have on the life of the University.
