Lester “Snake” Roberts

It is with great sadness that Pfeiffer University announces the death on July 31 of Lester “Snake” Roberts, 92, who served as the head of security on the Misenheimer campus, for 27 years before retiring from that position in 1994. Unable to stay idle, though, he signed on as the head of security at nearby Uwharrie Point, serving 20 years there before retiring for good.

Editor’s Note: Rep. John Lewis died of pancreatic cancer shortly after this article ran. The office serving his constituents is now named The Office of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. Marcus Sawyers ’18 works there as a staffer, having assumed the new title of Senior Confidential Advisor.

Back in the early 2000s, Dr. Charles Ambrose, Pfeiffer University’s president from 1998 to 2010, asked each university unit for a Steeple of Excellence project. The task of coming up with one for the now-defunct School of Adult Studies fell to Dr. Vernease Miller, who was serving as the advisor of the school’s Health Administration program.

Lea Hilton ’21 of Kannapolis has been volunteering for nonprofits for as long as she can remember. As a Francis Scholar at Pfeiffer University, she received a Francis Service Scholarship, which obligated her to complete 60 service hours each semester.
