Faculty Spotlight – Dr. Dawn Lucas
Meet Dr. Dawn Lucas, our Interim Dean of the Undergraduate College. Dr. Lucas has been teaching for 28 years, 25 of which have been at Pfeiffer! When asked how she became interested in her field, Dr. Lucas says, “I grew up knowing I would always be a teacher. After a few years in public education, I moved to North Carolina and earned my Master’s. Once hired by Pfeiffer, I never looked back! The combination of higher education and teacher education is a perfect mix for me.”
Dr. Lucas teaches courses in Health and Physical Education and in the Teacher Education Program. She hopes that those who take her classes will learn how to best serve students who are placed in their path, and that they leave her classes feeling passionate about what they do and who they teach. When it comes to her achievements, Dr. Lucas says, “winning awards and publishing articles is great. However, my greatest achievements are the students I get to watch grow as people and professionals. Being in contact with students who have graduated over the last two decades and still being there as a mentor for them is amazing!”
As Interim Dean of the Undergraduate College, Dr. Lucas hopes to continue the excellent legacy Pfeiffer University has in our region and around the state of North Carolina. Undergraduate faculty are currently working on three initiatives: excellence in the classroom (as faculty and teaching scholars), student success (as a community of mentors), and the health and wellness of our community stakeholders. Dr. Lucas says, “we have a great group of department chairs leading an amazing faculty. I have confidence in our ability to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students.”
