Pfeiffer unveils new Knapp Sac in Stokes Student Center

ribbon cutting resizedMon., Aug. 29 was the official grand opening of the new Knapp Sack, featuring Sandella's Flatbread Café located in Stokes Student Center.

Philip Howard, president of SGA; Dr. Russ Sharples, dean of students; Mirsad Selimbegovic, general manager of dining services; Dr. Tracy Espy, provost and Sharon Bard, director of facilities were on hand to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony.

Robin Hayes, chairman, North Carolina Republican Party, to deliver keynote address at Pfeiffer University Fall Convocation

robin hayesRobin Hayes, chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party and former Congressman from the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina's District 8 (1999-2009), is the keynote speaker for Pfeiffer University's 2012 Fall Convocation, Fri., Sept. 7, 10 a.m., a ceremony that takes place in Merner Gymnasium to officially open the 2012-13 academic year.

Mr. Hayes, a Concord native, was first elected to public office in 1978 to the Concord Board of Aldermen, then elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1992. While a member of Congress, Mr. Hayes was on the Armed Services, Transportation and Agriculture committees and chairman of the Livestock subcommittee and co-chairman for the Special Forces and Philanthropy caucuses.

New Student Orientation will help students get connected

 MG 8918resizedThe theme of this year's New Student Orientation is "Get Connected! It's Electric," and the schedule of events provides a weekend full of exciting opportunities for new students to connect with the University and each other.

New Student Orientation, which will take place Aug. 16-19, allows new students to get acquainted to campus, meet new friends, finalize registration and prepare for classes. In addition to the faculty and staff available to help students settle in, there are peer mentors, upperclassmen students who dedicate their time to helping new students find their way. Peer Mentors facilitate New Student Orientation activities and are available to students throughout their first year at Pfeiffer.

Marriage and Family Therapy Program Prepares Students for Rewarding Careers

ellen wilsonEllen Wilson '13 is enrolled in Pfeiffer's Marriage and Family Therapy Program and works with the Pfeiffer Institute for Marriage and Family Therapy, a community-based therapy and training clinic that offers counseling serviced to individuals, couples and families. She is a Charlotte native and holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Davidson College. 

Why do you want to become a marriage and family therapist?
An internship during my junior year of college at Broughton Hospital in Morganton sparked an interest in clinical psychology and family therapy. After graduating, I worked for five years at Thompson Child and Family Focus, a psychiatric residential treatment facility where I became acutely aware of the impact that early childhood attachment trauma has on emotional and mental health in later childhood and adolescence. My work with the children at Thompsons inspired me to continue my education so I could better serve individuals, couples and families suffering from attachment-related injuries.
