David grew up in Stanly County, graduated from Albemarle High School in 1966 and Pfeiffer College in 1970 with a major in History and a minor in English. He then started working for the Industrial Division of Riegel Paper Corporation as a sales trainee. The company later became Rexham Corporation. He was employed with them for 26 years. His last position was Director of Sales and Marketing.
Dr. Zane Eargle, President of Pfeiffer at the time, convinced him to come back and join the management team at Pfeiffer. He left Rexham in 1996, moved back to Albemarle and became Vice President for Marketing and Enrollment at Pfeiffer, a position he held for 11 years.
Then in 2007, he moved across “Curlytail” and coached tennis for the next 4 years. As an alumnus, I have stayed very active in Pfeiffer affairs for over 40 years. In 2023, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award , and is also a member of the Sports Hall of Fame.
Smith has also been active in the community as well, having been on numerous civic committees and boards, including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Hospice, ADDC, and Stanly Economic Development Commission.
He and his wife, Janice, are active members of First Lutheran Church.
