VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

The VITA program is sponsored by the IRS and offers free income tax assistance for households with incomes of $50,000 or less. Specifically, you help participants complete their income taxes, file them and provide an estimated date that their refund will arrive. (You will need to get IRS certified in certain levels of income tax preparation before you can do this, so talk to your advisor about how to get certified.)

Cost Project with the Small Business Center

This project provides an opportunity for the cost accounting class to work directly with clients from the Small Business Center in Albemarle, N.C. You gain invaluable, real-world experience that most people only get after graduation. In turn, the client has an opportunity to form a partnership with a knowledgeable group of students and learn about financial aspects of investing in a small business. Over the course of the project, the class meets with the client and creates a business plan and financial forecasts to help the client decide if s/he should start their own business.

Gain Experience

If you join the Student Accounting Society, you’ll gain valuable accounting experience, network with potential employers and get to know what it’s actually like to work in the field of accounting. Don’t miss out!
