Pfeiffer University mourns the death on June 1, 2017, of Ruby Maxine Barnes Mason. Mrs. Mason began her career with Pfeiffer in 1959 as administrative assistant to the vice president of business affairs, and later for the development office. In 1966, she moved to the Office of Financial Aid, retiring in 1995 as its director. Beloved by students, she was honored in the 1980s with the Student Government Association Award and honorary membership in the class of 1982.
Mrs. Mason was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Thomasville, N.C., and moved the following year with her family to New London, N.C. A lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church, New London, she served every committee of the church as chairperson, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir, as well the United Methodist Women in several offices for the Western District Conference. Until her death, she was treasurer for the Woodmen of the World organization.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Mason; son, Gordon Mason ’76 (Sharon); grandchildren, Dustin “Dusty” Mason ’02 MSL (Lauren) and Allison Patrick (Thomas); great-grandchildren, Tyson and Emree Patrick, Bex and McClure Mason; and brother-in-law Walter Mason.
Hartsell Funeral Home, 522 North Second Street, Albemarle, is serving the family; they will receive visitors Fri., June 2, 5-7 p.m. The funeral is Sat., June 3, 11 a.m., Bethel United Methodist Church, 44118 Highway 740, New London, with burial following in the church cemetery.
