Pfeiffer University Students Serve to Combat Homelessness and Hunger during Winter Break

WinterBreak Wilmington BSeveral Pfeiffer University students spent part of their winter break in Wilmington, N.C., serving organizations whose missions are to combat hunger and homelessness in Wilmington and surrounding communities. Over the course of the three-day trip coordinated by the Francis Center for Servant Leadership, students volunteered with Wilmington Habitat for Humanity, Good Shepherd Center and Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

“We helped build a house, cleaned dormitories and packaged rice into family-sized bags,” said senior Brittney Quaranto. “The trip was the experience of a lifetime and definitely made me appreciate all that I have.”

Melissa Roberts, a senior at Pfeiffer University, has received a 2013 Community Impact Student Award. Given by North Carolina Campus Compact, an association of colleges and universities committed to fostering campus-community engagement, the award recognizes one outstanding student on each campus for making a difference in the community. Roberts is one of nineteen students across the state to be honored.

Pfeiffer University students “Give Kids the World” during fall break

Pfeiffer students make a difference in Charleston over spring break

francis center springbOver spring break, the Francis Center for Servant Leadership and Peer Ministries from Pfeiffer University teamed up to take 12 students, one staff member  and one community member to Charleston, S.C., on an alternative break trip. The group spent four days volunteering at three service sites: Lowcountry Children's Museum, Lowcountry Food Bank and SCORE (South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement).
