Why Pfeiffer

Pfeiffer University is pleased to announce Mr. Rick Thames ’75 as speaker for the 2017 Opening Convocation on Friday, September 1 at 10:00 a.m.

Mr. Thames, a member of the Pfeiffer Board of Trustees, is currently the Executive In Residence and Visiting Journalism Professor at Queens University in Charlotte following a successful 40 year career as a journalist in the newspaper industry. From 2004-17, he served as the Executive Editor and Vice President for News at The Charlotte Observer where he oversaw a newsroom with nearly 100 journalists and correspondents. Prior to joining the Observer, Mr. Thames served in various roles of increasing responsibility in newspapers, starting as a reporter at The Fayetteville Observer in 1978.

He has been active in professional organizations, currently serving as the President Elect of the North Carolina Coalition for Open Government, an educational organization based at Elon University that promotes public support for transparency in government. He previously served as President of the North Carolina Press Association after serving on its board for many years.

Mr. Thames earned an A.B. from Pfeiffer in English and an M.S. in Communication from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. While at Pfeiffer, he was an active student-athlete on the men’s tennis team and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the Order of the Sundial and the concert choir. He also worked on the Phoenix literary magazine and the school newspaper, where he assumed leadership roles.
