Pfeiffer University mourns the passing on October 17, 2017, of Dr. Joseph Todd Echols, Jr. Dr. Echols joined the faculty at Pfeiffer in 1967 as an associate professor of chemistry, before being appointed professor of chemistry and the head of the chemistry department. Upon his retirement in 1997, Dr. Echols held the position of emeritus professor of chemistry.
Dr. Echols was born July 5, 1936, in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Belhaven College in 1959 and obtained a doctorate degree in chemistry from the University of Mississippi in 1963. During his time at Pfeiffer, Dr. Echols published in several scholarly journals and was a member of the American Chemical Society.
He is survived by his wife of nine years, Rita Echols; his sisters, Linda Perry, Mary Clark and Ruth McNinch; his brothers, Charles Echols and John Echols; his three children, Kathy Echols, Roger Echols (Carol) and Ruth Lloyd (Jeff); and seven grandchildren, Todd Echols, Jeff Echols, Caroline Echols and Abigail Lloyd, Justin Lloyd, Owen Lloyd and Scott Lloyd. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gail, in 1997.
A graveside service will be held on Sat., October 28, 4 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Misenheimer, N.C., with a reception to follow at Pfeiffer University in the Stokes Student Center Community Room. Arrangements are under the care of Hartsell Funeral Home.
