Former Pfeiffer chemistry faculty member and administrator, Dr. J. Michael Riemann has been named the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce 2017 Citizen of the year.
Dr. Riemann’s work extending the Carolina Thread Trail, dubbed “The Falcon Trail” from the north end of Stanly County south to Richfield, is one of his many civic contributions recognized by this award. The award is given to an outstanding citizen who has raised awareness of the Stanly County community through leadership and innovation. Dr. Riemann will receive the award at the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting on Feb. 28 at noon at CHS Stanly.
“Dr. Riemann has become my ‘go to’ person when I need help with a project that involves understanding the bigger civic picture in Stanly County,” said Dr. Colleen Perry Keith, President of Pfeiffer University. “He also helps me fill in the blanks with Pfeiffer history, and we are deeply indebted to him for his continued work with us and our Friends of the Library group. Mike and his wife Theda are dear friends and neighbors for Pfeiffer.”
Dr. Riemann’s Pfeiffer career spanned 37 years, from 1966 to 2003. He served in a number of roles during his tenure, including professor of chemistry, provost, and VP of institutional research and planning. Pfeiffer alumni honored Dr. Riemann’s legacy at the time of his retirement with the creation of the Riemann, Robertson, Manly Endowment which provides funding for student research internships. Gifts in honor of his impact on countless alumni continue to support this endowment.
Dr. Riemann has had a long-time active involvement in the growth of Pfeiffer’s science-related programming. He served as a member of the Harris Hall Campaign Steering Committee, which ultimately resulted in the construction of the Harris Hall Annex, as well as the renovation of Harris Science Hall. Pfeiffer is grateful for Dr. Riemann’s continued involvement in campus life through his leadership on the Friends of the Library Board and support of the Events Plus Subscription Series.
Dr. Riemann is the 22nd recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award. For more information or to register for the awards luncheon, visit the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce website at
