One of the most time-honored staples held by any university is their Literary Magazine. They are not only a gateway in which new and exciting individuals can come to discover Universities, but they are also a medium through which their community can speak through. As the spring has come upon us at Pfeiffer University, The Phoenix has been hard at work in preparation for what is to be their most monumental issue in recent history, perhaps the history of the Magazine itself, with its 60th issue. The Phoenix is Pfeiffer Universities literary magazine and has been in operation since the early 1950s. It started as a created form of expression for the students at Pfeiffer, but over the years it has grown into something more monumental than the founding members could have ever foreseen. It has been the home for young students that feel that they had no outlet or medium with which they could express themselves. Often times, and in the darkest times of our nation, it allowed students to have a voice when it would have been dangerous for them to do so. Suddenly, students became writers and writers became authors through the publication opportunity made available to them through the Phoenix. It incentivized an entirely new group of students to join the Pfeiffer family, because it brought hope and a chance that, for some, may have seemed out of reach for them due to their race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other defining characteristic. Suddenly, they could now become poets, short-story writers, biographers, journalists, and so much more than those individuals felt they could have been before its existence. Not only did it provide a creative outlet, but in recent years it has grown into a developing business as well. The staff consists of editors, design teams, social media relations, managers, etc. that run and maintain the status of the magazine beyond that of content creation. The 59th issue, Spring 2018, marked the beginning of yet another major growth spurt for the magazine crossing oceans and welcoming international submissions for the very first time. It also welcomed new explorations into the digital world with the formation of the Phoenix’s official YouTube page The Phoenix Experience and, thanks to Shayla Moore and Tamiya Anderson, the launch of their successful Podcast “The Phoenix Experience” in the Spring of 2019 has been a direct result of this expansion into the unknown digital marketplace. With all of the changes that have been made and are continuing to be made at the Phoenix, it is a true testament to the hard work and dedication that the staff has to put out this 60th issue. Phoenix faculty director, Dr. Marissa Schwalm, has helped facilitate and encourage the staff's production in place for this upcoming issue as it plans not only to be a monumental issue for the magazine, but also a mark of remembrance as to how far the magazine has come and how far it could potentially go. The launch party for the 60th issue is set for Wednesday, April 10th at 7 pm in the Stokes community room.
