Pfeiffer Athletics Celebrates First Annual All-Sports Banquet

Pfeiffer athletics hosted the first annual All-Sports Banquet to honor the seniors as well as team MVPs for each sport. President Mike Miller and Athletic Director Bob Reasso addressed the student athletes and assisted in distributing the honors along with Pfeiffer’s Faculty Athletic Representative Ross Braymer.
The banquet consisted of a formal setting in which the 51 seniors were given plaques in honor of their dedication to the university. Each team was awarded a most valuable player who received a bronze falcon trophy.
Taking Care of Business: Pfeiffer Business Students Lead the Pack at Phi Beta Lambda N.C. State Competition

On April 12, nine Pfeiffer University students participated—and excelled—at the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) business fraternity 2013-14 State Leadership Conference in Charlotte, N.C., where they demonstrated their knowledge of economics, statistical analysis, organizational behavior and leadership, website design and related topics in competition against PBL chapters from across North Carolina.
Six students earned spots to progress to PBL’s national competition in June in Nashville, Tenn., by finishing first or second in their categories. These include M. Darien Malone, 2nd place, Microeconomics; Christie Baran, 1st place, Microeconomics; and Kristina Trexler, Shana Tarlton and Christie Mello, who were awarded 2nd place for website design. Also participating were Hernan Jaimes and Henry Furman.
Dusty Mason, Award-Winning Gold’s Gym Franchisee, Featured Speaker for Pfeiffer University’s Free Lunch and Learn Series

Dusty Mason ’02 is the featured speaker for Lunch and Learn, Pfeiffer University’s free speaker series, Wed., April 16, noon-1 p.m., at Pfeiffer’s Charlotte campus, 4701 Park Road. He will present “Achieving Business Excellence.” (Registration required: https://community.pfeiffer.edu/lls)
Mr. Mason, an award-winning franchisee with Gold’s Gym, owns three Gold’s Gym locations through his company, Carolina Fitness Group, Inc., in Albemarle, Harrisburg and Epicenter-Uptown Charlotte. A fourth location in Rock Hill, S.C., is set to open in September 2014. Selected by Gold’s Gym International to develop the Charlotte metro market, he will lead the development of five additional sites over the next five years.
Luke Dollar and the IMAX Film "Island of Lemurs: Madagascar"

Pfeiffer University Associate Professor of Biology Luke Dollar contributed to a new IMAX film, “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar,” which opens Fri. April 4 and runs through Aug. 14 at the Fernbank (Ga.) Museum of Natural History.
A National Geographic Explorer, Dollar has studied lemurs for over 20 years.

Chinese Language and Culture Camp
With a focus on cross-cultural and experiential learning and utilizing multi-sensory activities and discussions, campers in grades 2-6 will spend each day immersed in the exciting world of China and Chinese culture. Experienced, native-speaking teachers and a team of energetic and engaging assistants will lead campers through sessions, including special "no English" times that are challenging as well as a ton of fun.

Pfeiffer University mourns the loss of Dr. Vallin Dayton Estes, professor emeritus of German

Dr. Vallin Dayton Estes, professor emeritus of German, died on Sun., March 30, 2014, at the Kiser Hospice House, Salisbury. He began teaching at Pfeiffer in 1970 and was affiliated with the school through 2000.
Over the course of his tenure at Pfeiffer, Dr. Estes was a professor of German in the Department of Language and Literature. Additionally, he published many academic papers and was an active public servant. Among other organizations, Dr. Estes worked with the North Carolina Hemophilia Foundation, the North Carolina Arthritis Foundation and the Parish Council Annunciation Catholic Church.

Pfeiffer University mourns the loss of Dr. Phyllis Gore Houghton, professor emerita of Education

Dr. Phyllis Gore Houghton, professor emerita of Education, died on Thurs., March 20, 2014, at The Pines at Davidson. She taught at Pfeiffer from 1961 until her retirement in 1985.
Over the course of her tenure at Pfeiffer, Dr. Houghton was head of the department of Education, director of the developmental reading clinic, coordinator for Elementary Education and chairperson for the division of social and behavioral sciences. Notably, she served as chairperson for Pfeiffer’s centennial in 1984-85 and contributed to two books that were published about Pfeiffer’s history and the buildings on Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus.

Pfeiffer Students Present at Social Studies Conference

On Feb. 20-21, Pfeiffer University division of Education professor Dr. Angie Kern and several teacher education candidates presented at the North Carolina Council for the Social Studies 44th Annual State Conference in Greensboro. In their sessions, titled "There's Always Time for Social Studies!" and "Who Says There is No Time to Teach Social Studies?," Teacher education candidates presented information regarding effective use of social studies learning centers elementary classrooms. Materials were distributed to attendees that will allow educators to recreate these learning centers in their classes.
