Pfeiffer University helps celebrate Stanly County’s economic development achievements

On March 7 at the Stanly County Outstanding Economic Development Ally Awards hosted by the Stanly County Economic Development Commission, Pfeiffer University administrators, faculty members and alumni were introduced to North Carolina’s new secretary of commerce, Sharon Decker (fourth from left) by outgoing secretary and Pfeiffer alumnus and trustee Keith Crisco ’64 (third from right), owner, AEC Narrow Fabrics, Asheboro. Greeting the secretaries were Dr. Michael Riemann ‘66 professor emeritus of chemistry and mayor, village of Misenheimer; Thad Henry, special assistant to the president for advancement; Dr. Ken Bandy, dean, division of business; Uconda Dunn ‘06, NC Department of Commerce, Charlotte office; and Trustee Tony Dennis, Stanly County commissioner and chairman, Stanly County Economic Development Board.

Pfeiffer students spend spring break participating in service and adventure

Most college students go home or to the beach for spring break but seven Pfeiffer students joined two student trip leaders on the Alaska Malamute Service & Adventure Experience sponsored by Pfeiffer’s Center for Outdoor Leadership.
Sophomore Lindsey Sisco, student trip leader and Junior Zach Thompson, assistant student trip leader, led students to Wayeh Kennel located in Spring City, Tenn., which specializes in breeding Alaska Malamutes and training them for work in the show ring, therapy and as house pets. Additionally, the leaders incorporated an educational visit to an aquarium and hiked to the summit of Crowder’s Mountain.

Pfeiffer University has been named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service for its commitment to and demonstration of exemplary, innovative and effective community service programs. Pfeiffer has earned this distinction every year since the designation’s inception in 2006.

“McEducators Night” features Pfeiffer faculty and administrators as servers
Pfeiffer University’s freshman class will host “McEducators Night” on Tues., March 12, 4:30-8 p.m., at the McDonald’s restaurant located at the corner of Route 49 and Route 52 in Richfield, N.C. During the event, which features members of Pfeiffer’s faculty and administration as counter servers, a portion of each customer’s receipt will support Special Olympics Stanly County, specifically for uniforms for its basketball team.

Celebrating Black History month by promoting continual learning
Dr. Rosemary Minyard, associate professor of economics and finance for the Master’s of Business Administration program, is a seasoned faculty member who is highly experienced in the corporate world and the classroom.
Dr. Minyard has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry, working in a variety of capacities. These experiences have included working for the Congressional Budget Office in National Security International Affairs, Merrill Lynch Capital Markets in Debt Trading Strategy, FDIC/RTC, where she evaluated assets from insured institutions from all over the country and Bank of America Corporate Audit for Global Corporate Investment Banking.

Plan, Prepare, Protect: Strengthening Safety in Ministry
Pfeiffer University will host a three-day seminar April 17-19 at its Charlotte, N.C., campus and Myers Park United Methodist Church for church and ministry leaders that provides education and resources for addressing and strengthening safety and managing risk in congregations and other ministry settings. Plan, Prepare, Protect: Strengthening Safety in Ministry will prepare clergy as well as church business administrators, finance leaders and trustees to inform their congregations about security priorities, mitigate security risks and evaluate safety plans.

Antonio Harvey ’93 is a prime example of a Pfeiffer student-athlete who accomplished his goals. After 11 seasons of professional basketball—eight in the NBA and three in Europe—he’s continued his career in professional sports as an announcer for the Portland Trailblazer, a job he’s had for 14 years. Even with a hectic travel season, being a sports announcer is a dream job because it allows him to analyze and study basketball, the sport that has always been a big part of his life.
Freedom Writer Tiffony Jacobs speaks of overcoming adversity through determination

On Mon., Feb. 18, original Freedom Writers member Tiffony Jacobs spoke at Henry Pfeiffer Chapel to a group of students, faculty and staff.
As a high school sophomore, Ms. Jacobs joined the Freedom Writers, a group of students in Ms. Erin Gruwell’s English class at Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif., who wrote anonymous journal entries about the challenges of living in their community. She found strength and determination to achieve a successful future through Ms. Gruwell’s emphasis on Holocaust education.
Pfeiffer University to offer eight-week graduate courses online

For the first time this spring, Pfeiffer University is offering eight-week graduate courses online. The two courses available in this format, which typically run 16 weeks, are designed to accommodate the schedules of busy working adults and allow them to complete their master’s degree programs faster than with traditional schedules. This program is not open to students who are currently enrolled for the spring semester.
