Pfeiffer Celebrates Spring 2013 Graduates

Pfeiffer University's Class of 2013 Receives Their Diplomas, First-Ever Nursing Graduates Cross the Stage with Their ClassmatesMitchell 1

On May 12, Pfeiffer University celebrated spring commencement as 135 members of the class of 2013, among them the first students from Pfeiffer to earn bachelor of science in nursing degrees, officially completed their undergraduate studies.

Dr. Stephen Ray Mitchell, dean for medical education and professor of medicine and pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., delivered the commencement address. Dr. Mitchell, who was a first-generation college student when he entered the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 40 years ago, advised students to “find your passion, broaden your intellect and achieve your potential.”

 

Jo Ellen Newsome of New London was awarded the Senior Scholastic Achievement Award. A member of Pfeiffer's inaugural nursing majors, Jo Ellen earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Her nursing degree is JoEllen's second degree from Pfeiffer, having earned a B.A. in English in 1994. She has worked for Pfeiffer's office of advancement for 16 years.

Diamond Pate, religion major, was awarded the Pearl Walton Fisher Citizenship Award for exceptional civic service.

“Pfeiffer is extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments of our students, who are entering the workforce qualified and with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm,” said Michael C. Miller, president. “Graduates from all disciplines are making their mark locally, regionally and beyond.”

Other noteworthy graduates are:

Houston Armstrong, Clemmons, N.C., a member of Pfeiffer's soccer team and a pre-law major, plans to attend law school after taking a year to coach the Twin City Youth Soccer Association in Winston-Salem. Houston's parents Roger ('81) and Sherry Fouoshee ('80) Armstrong and uncle, Dr. Joseph Armstrong III­ '82, Westfield, N.J., were present to watch him graduate. Chelsi Haefele, Topeka, Kan., and a member of Pfeiffer's women's tennis team, starts her new job as staff accountant on May 20 with Rives and Associates; she will work from the firm's Lexington, N.C. office.
