Dr. Stephen Ray Mitchell, dean for medical education, Georgetown University School of Medicine, to address graduates at Pfeiffer University's spring Commencement

Pfeiffer University announces that Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D., M.A.C.P., F.A.A.P., F.A.C.R., dean for medical education and professor of medicine and pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., will offer the commencement address at spring 2013 commencement exercises, Sat., May 11, 10:30 a.m., Merner Gym, Misenheimer campus.
Dr. Mitchell, who recently earned an MBA from Georgetown University, completed undergraduate and medical studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and training and certification in internal medicine and pediatrics at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, also in Chapel Hill. Subspecialty training was at Georgetown University, while specialized training to become a physician educator was through the Stanford Faculty Development Program and as a Macy Scholar for Physician Educators at the Harvard-Macy Institute.
â€œPfeiffer University is honored that Dr. Mitchell will share his expertise with graduates, faculty and friends for an occasion that marks the start of new careers for students who have worked hard to arrive at commencement,â€ said President Michael C. Miller. â€œWith his obvious commitment to lifelong learning, he is sure to provide inspiration to graduates of all disciplinesâ€”including Pfeiffer's first graduating class of nursing majorsâ€”who wish to make their mark in their fields and the world.â€
From 1973-90, Dr. Mitchell served as a reservist in the U.S. Air Force, including active duty appointments at the rank of lieutenant colonel from 1981-90. While stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, he served as personal physician to several members of Congress.
In addition to holding a number of prestigious professional and teaching awards, Dr. Mitchell has been recognized for excellence for more than two decades by his peers, Washingtonian magazine and National Guide to America's Top Physicians. He is a member of American Medical Association of Medical Colleges, American Academy of Pediatrics (Fellow); American Medical Association and American College of Physicians, American College of Rheumatology (Founding Fellow), Federated Council of Internal Medicine and Washington Metropolitan Arthritis Foundation and others.
