On  April 25, Pfeiffer University will present Virginia Canipe of Charlotte, who supports a number of charitable and nonprofit endeavors through the Atlanta-based Walter G. Canipe Foundation, with its 2013 Heart of Grace Award. The award will be presented at a luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Pfeiffer University's Charlotte campus, 4701 Park Road. The keynote speaker is Paul Leonard, former CEO, Habitat for Humanity International.

Pfeiffer University presents the Heart of Grace Award annually to celebrate the achievements of women whose lives and work embody a spirit of servant leadership in their communities and the world, exemplifying the intentions and spirit of Pfeiffer's commitment to servant leadership.

In that vein, Mrs. Canipe has supported a variety of community-based and national nonprofit organizations in Mecklenburg County and beyond for the past 25 years, including Pfeiffer University's Department of Nursing,  Mecklenburg Ministries, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Alzheimer's Association and Providence United Methodist Church.

“As Pfeiffer University continues to demonstrate leadership in connecting health-related majors to the economic vitality of the region, we recognize the far-reaching impact of Mrs. Canipe's support for the nursing program,” said President Michael C. Miller. “Her generosity, which touches countless lives, is clearly linked to the academic and clinical success of Pfeiffer's inaugural class of nursing students, who are set to graduate in May and begin careers rooted in meaningful service and exceptional professional expertise.”

The Heart of Grace Awards is named to reflect the sentiments of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as stated in his 1968 sermon, A Drum Major's Instinct. He said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve…You only need to have a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”
