Pfeiffer students make a difference in Charleston over spring break

Over spring break, the Francis Center for Servant Leadership and Peer Ministries from Pfeiffer University teamed up to take 12 students, one staff member and one community member to Charleston, S.C., on an alternative break trip. The group spent four days volunteering at three service sites: Lowcountry Children's Museum, Lowcountry Food Bank and SCORE (South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement).
Officials at both the food bank and SCORE were impressed with how quickly and efficiently Pfeiffer students worked. John Borza, a sophomore, said, â€œWe showed the people at the food bank that Pfeiffer University goes above and beyond the call of duty.â€
The group packaged more than 11,200 pounds of citrus fruit for the food bank, which will be distributed to food pantries and soup kitchens along the South Carolina coast. With the help of a high school group from North Carolina, they also filled 573 five-gallon bags of oyster shells for SCORE. The bags will be used to build shoreline habitat and prevent beach erosion.
Several participating students noted the positive outcome of the collaboration between Peer Ministries and the Francis Center. â€œVolunteering during spring break was a rewarding experience that really opened my eyes to multiple social justice and environmental issues,â€ said Melissa Roberts, a junior. â€œThis trip also brought together a diverse group of students working towards a common goal: servant leadership.â€
Matthew Humphries, a freshman on his first Pfeiffer-sponsored trip, agreed. â€œThe alternative break trip with Pfeiffer University's Francis Center offered a great service opportunity and an amazing vacationing experience in Charleston,â€ he said. â€œThe trip was a great experience for the participants to serve South Carolina's community. We enjoyed this opportunity to gain new friendships and serve others, which is vital to the Pfeiffer experience.â€
