The Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University (located at the Charlotte campus on Park Road), in a special collaboration with Opera Carolina and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, will present Art to Poetry to Music, a music and visual art performance that explores and demonstrates traditional Chinese calligraphy in combination with Chinese and Western visual art, music and poetry.
Demonstrating the art of Chinese calligraphy is Dr. Hong Zhao, distinguished master calligrapher and philologist. Accompanying musicians include Sun Yu, internationally acclaimed bass-baritone; Xue'er Ding, guzheng; Emily Urbanek, piano; Tanja Bechtler, cello; and the Marvin Ridge High School Women's Ensemble.
Performances will take place at the Bechtler Museum of Art, 420 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, on Sun., Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a lobby reception at 5:30 p.m., featuring a cash bar and complimentary hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the performances are available through the Bechtler's website: https://purchaseonline.bechtler.org/public.
A modified version of the performance will be offered on Fri., Jan. 18, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., at Henry Pfeiffer Chapel on Pfeiffer's Misenheimer campus, 48380 U.S. Hwy 52N. These performances are free and open to the community; Pfeiffer students will receive cultural credit for attending.
“Practiced for more than 5,000 years, Chinese calligraphy communicates the art and history of Chinese culture,†said Weihong Yan, assistant professor of Chinese language and culture and executive director of the Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University. “The art form embodies the Chinese principles of artistic expression, abstractly reflecting the freedom of the soul similar to Western painting and sculpture.â€
