The North Carolina AMVETS Career Center will present Michael C. Miller, president, Pfeiffer University, with the North Carolina AMVETS Advocate of the Year Award on Wed., Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. The award, given to an individual who demonstrates outstanding support for AMVETS endeavors and the needs of AMVETS clients, will be presented during a ceremony at the President's House on Pfeiffer's Misenheimer campus, 48380 U.S. Hwy 52N.
The scheduled ceremony will serve also as an opportunity to mark the AMVETS Career Center's first anniversary, which opened on Pfeiffer's campus in January 2012. It was one of six AMVETS sites nationwide to open as the result of a grant from the Call to Duty Endowment. AMVETS Career Centers provide job-searching services to active duty and veterans of the U.S. armed services; the site at Pfeiffer works with AMVETS Post 910, Bank of Stanly, and the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce to enhance communication and networking as well as establish partnerships that support the AMVETS mission.
“From the beginning, President Miller has fully supported the AMVETS Career Center's efforts to help active duty, guard, reserve and veterans who are seeking work to find it,†said Charles Cosgrove, Career Center Commander. “The endorsement of Pfeiffer University, a designated Military Friendly School, will become apparent in the coming months as personnel drawdowns in many active duty locations take effect.â€
Among expected notable attendees are David Beam, commander, North Carolina Department of AMVETS, AMVETS Post 101; George “Pat†Waters, a 1965 graduate of Pfeiffer University grandson of General George S. Patton; and various municipal and state government officials.
