 The Pfeiffer men's and women's soccer teams will host the Street Soccer 945 teams of Charlotte in a pair of exhibition games starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, as a part of the university's annual Hunger and Homelessness Week, which raises awareness about the issues that surround hunger and poverty, while encouraging students to do their part in local communities and around the world.
Street Soccer is a homeless soccer club based out of urban ministries in Charlotte. Following the exhibition contests, both Street Soccer teams will join the Pfeiffer student-athletes in the cafeteria for dinner and dialogue.
Monday night will begin the week of activities with the screening of "Kicking It," a documentary of the 2006 homeless soccer world cup team in Cape Town, South Africa. Featured in the movie are six U.S. homeless players including one from Charlotte. The U.S. team is composed of players from Street Soccer programs across the country.
Street Soccer U.S.A. is an organization that promotes the growth and development of a national network of grassroots soccer programs which help the homeless and impoverished move forward in the game of life. The exhibition games and post-game dinner/dialogue is a great opportunity for students on campus to interact with this unique group of athletes and their coaches.
All events are free and open to the public. For those who are interested in eating with the teams afterwards, a small charge will take place in the cafeteria.
