Global Participation-Misenheimer School of Business
Current Pfeiffer business students, graduates and faculty have a long history of experiencing life with a global reach. Pfeiffer business students have lived, worked and studied across the globe including in Australia, England, Norway, Ghana, Italy, Germany, Sweden and China.
International students studying in the School of Business have come from several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, India and China.
Faculty members have traveled the globe to participate in economic training programs, to recruit students, to lead Pfeiffer students during cultural and business themed tourism and for personal business and for education enrichment.
A goal of the School of Business is to provide multiple opportunities for students to travel abroad and experience a variety of cultures.
GPS Summer 2011 School of Business, Misenheimer
On May 9th, 2011, a group of Pfeiffer students embarked on a journey to experience life from new and different perspectives. Global Pfeiffer Studies (GPS) offers students the opportunity to learn in a study abroad experience. The 2011 summer program took three students (John Anderson, Tyler Joyner and Rachel Ford) to study leadership in Europe. According to Dr. Howard, the trip served two main purposes: to enable students to experience and understand different cultures and to rethink the purpose and definition of leadership.
The twenty-three day program was worth it, simply for the exposure to cultural differences and varying perspectives of looking at different phenomenon within our world. However, the greatest learning came from serving alongside others and chatting with other leaders about how they view leadership, ministry and life.
While in Kandern, Germany, the team helped local leaders by digging a garden, fixing parts of the roof, moving bricks for another project, and several cleaning projects. Later in the program, while in Chrastava, Czech Republic, the team assisted local leaders in building an outdoor stage, fixing a swing set, and participating in English conversation classes in various towns in the area.
“I don’t know what the students will remember most from the experience in five years,” said Dr. Howard. “Maybe it will be the new cultural experiences like a horse and buggy ride through the Black Forest, hiking in the Alps, visiting the concentration camp at Dachau, seeing the beauty of art at the Louvre or studying alongside German students. My hope is that they witnessed first hand the power of serving others and what life can look like when we collaborate with others, sometimes at the expense of our own self-interests.”
